Women’s identity is a recurring theme in Juliet Haysom’s work. In the Studies in a Second Hand series, she explores the virtual world of fashion magazines. Her drawings are a “replica” of the most stunning Vogue photo shoots that crystallize our society’s aspirations of beauty and perfection. Models are embedded within wild landscapes suggesting that perfect beauty is natural and effortless – yet the models’ behaviour and image have been composed with studious care.
Similarly the drawn images are pushed to the point that their purposely meticulous technique appears barely visible much in the way that the drawing from a letter received from one of the members of the Copperplate Special Interest Group “reveals painstakingly the labour involved in their production”.
